Terrorism is one of Pakistan’s most critical security issues. Therefore, terrorists acquiring weapons of mass destruction is also a pressing matter. Pakistan believes that it is within a country’s own authority to try to handle situations with terrorists acquiring weapons of mass destruction. Pakistan believes that if nations are unable to control terrorist from obtaining WMD, then they have the responsibility to seek help, possibly through partnerships. Pakistan sought partnership with The United States against a common terrorist threat. A unilateral attack on the Taliban Leader ensued, which was detrimental to any Pakistani- Taliban negotiations. In addition, 40,000 people have died, the vast majority innocent civilians, and massive damage has occurred to Pakistani social and physical infrastructure. For this reason, Pakistan believes if a partnership were to develop, it should be a bilateral partnership.
Pakistan believes that terrorist groups should not have access or opportunity to acquire WMD, and it is a nation’s duty to try and prevent terrorist groups from doing so. Intervenience from the international community in protecting against terrorist groups obtaining WMD is necessary at times. Pakistan supports resolution 2118, dealing with the destruction of Syria’s chemical weapons, and resolution 1696 dealing with sanctions on Iran for their nuclear program because of supposed terrorism. Iran has reaped many benefits from their cooperation and anti- terrorism efforts- the lifting of sanctions, subsidies and political influence. Intervenience from the international community can have positive effects and is necessary at times. If intervenience happens, Pakistan would like to stress respect of international law when dealing with the war on terror.
