Argentina has been a peaceful country for decades and we have done it without weapons of mass destruction (WMD). We have been a proponent of the Missile Technology Control Regime (MTCR) for twenty years now and we have also acceded to the Treaty of the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT) making us a non-nuclear weapon state. We harness the power of nuclear energy for peaceful purposes, not acts of terrorism. We have been subject to acts of terrorism, and if these terrorists would have possessed WMD the results would had been catastrophic.
Efforts by both the UN and individual states need to escalate if WMD or WMD components are to be better secured. With extra efforts, WMD will be able to be secured, monitored, and it will prevent any extremist groups from seizing and operating them. Individuals states need to either increase security and monitoring of WMD stockpiles, or they must destroy the stockpiles that they cannot better secure. It would be up to the international community to set standards for security of these stockpiles. Any state not able to meet these standards should give their WMD to the UN for proper disposal.
If the international community wants to have a chance at stopping trafficking of WMD, then border control, especially where terrorists groups are copious, needs to greatly increase. Individual states cannot let extremist groups move freely between borders. If states cannot stop this, then the responsibility will have to be taken up by the international community. The international community must make it impossible for WMD to be acquired by terrorist groups if they want some sort of world peace. If any terrorist group acquires WMD, it can target any country thus making it an international problem to be dealt with utmost seriousness and significance. WMD only make tensions rise, make tempers flare, and kill innocent people.
