Though Canada agrees that the removal of Mohammad Morsi from power was very important for a fair and democratic government in Egypt, military intervention has gone too far. There have been far too many deadly clashes between the military of Egypt and the Muslim Brotherhood that affect places of worship, and this is not acceptable. The military and the Muslim Brotherhood need to have clean, civilized, discussion in order to fix all of the problems between one another and end this deadly standoff they have. The many past attacks on Coptic Orthodox and Anglican churches and on Baptist and Franciscan institutions are seriously concerning. We have already closed our embassy in Cairo already for security reasons. Canada gives their deepest sympathies to the victims of these religious attacks and call upon the Egyptian government to protect worshippers and sites of religious practice from further violence and intimidation and Canada condemns the attacks in Egypt.
We have talked to Mr. Mohammad Naguib Hussein Fakhry and shared our thoughts with him. Canada believes the best approach to these problems of violence in Egypt is trying to implement a transparent democratic system that listens to the voices of Egyptian citizens, including members of civil society and religious minorities. This is the best way to restore calmness, peace, non-violence, and give all Egyptians a chance to have a say in the future stability and prosperity of their own country. The UN should monitor the situation in Egypt because of how ridiculously violent things are getting.
