France condemns the use of violence in the crackdown of pro-Morsi protests and demands an immediate stop to the use of lethal force. We are extremely saddened by the loss of life of Egyptian protesters. The Egyptian interim-government must respect the right to peacefully protest, and they must make every effort restore calm in their country and refrain from violence when dealing with protests. The action of protesters must be limited to peaceful protests, if they want their voice to be truly heard. The only way for stability to return to the country is for Egyptian security forces to cease violent response to protest. Without stability, fair, democratic elections will not be able to be held.
A politically and economically stable Egypt is vital to France, the European Union, and the world. France supports the Egyptian interim-government and trusts that this government is on its way to a democratic political transition. However, France insists that the Egyptian interim-government implement a ‘road map’ to swift democratic elections. The process must be all-inclusive, though; meaning that all political parties in Egypt are represented. A substantial number of Egyptians supported the takeover of the government by the military, yet the majority of Islamists continue to oppose the ousting of former President Morsi. For these elections to be considered fair, though, all political parties in Egypt must be represented.
France calls upon all member-nations to act on this issue. We, as the United Nations, cannot sit back and watch as hundreds of people are killed. We have a responsibility to make an attempt to resolve this growing conflict and help the political transition proceed. France is willing to work with all other nations to help implement measures to support the transition to representative civilian governance in Egypt.
