Bangladesh believes the 2015 Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty Review should mainly deal with nuclear weapons in the Middle-East and the concern over slow disarmament of weapons. Due to the conflict in the Middle-East, establishing a safe nuclear-weapons-free zone is controversial, although taking into account the impact on humanitarian efforts will hopefully promote a nuclear-free zone. While many countries have agreed to disarmament of their nuclear weapons, the state of disarmament is slow and many member states have not fulfilled all agreed provisions. Measures need to be placed in order to gather commitment for disarmament. Additionally, a safe disposal of weapons must be devised and completed properly, before they reach the hands of those who would threaten international security.

Bangladesh supports a global community that eliminates all nuclear weapons to minimize the humanitarian consequences they inflict, including in the Middle-East. Due to the nature nuclear weapons have on the environment, the economy, and the potential for a nuclear war, the disarmament of nuclear weapons is essential. WMDs effect on existing populations is detrimental and creates long-lasting problems. In the hopes of never producing these destructive consequences again, Bangladesh is passionate and fully invested in the eradication of WMD internationally. Bangladesh has set the paragon for advocating the elimination of nuclear weapons by creating a nuclear-weapons-free zone and by being a member of the Nuclear Nonproliferation Treaty. Furthermore, Bangladesh joined the Biological and Toxin Weapons Convention and the Chemical Weapons Convention, which prohibit the stockpiling, use, and transport of any chemical weapons and promises assist in the destruction of harmful WMDs. Bangladesh is ready to support any country in its measures to ensure non-proliferation.

Bangladesh proposes a nuclear-free zone in the Middle East. Introducing these weapons would have catastrophic effects on the citizens and the humanitarian efforts of these countries. Concerning the disarmament of weapons, although significant progress has been made with the NPT, every member should complete certain steps toward complete disarmament by a specific set date. Not only will this prevent nuclear catastrophes, but it will hasten a solution for disposal safely and quickly. Bangladesh’s proposals will protect the Middle-East from the potential calamities of WMDs, create a nuclear-weapons-free zone, and quicken the process of disarmament. Any country’s proposals toward non-proliferation will have Bangladesh’s support.
