Denmark ambassador for disarmament and international security
Denmark remains fully supportive of the NPT and the quest for a nuclear weapon free world while allowing for the peaceful use of fiscal materials for power. While we may debate and try to solve global issues. At its core, we are making compromises which is no different from the average person who makes compromises in their daily life. While our compromises have greater global impact, they are rooted in the same thing trust which by definition is to rely upon or place confidence in someone or something.
Without trust among countries, we can never have a nuclear free world. The physical process of nuclear disarmament is challenging enough however if we cannot trust each other no matter how many treaties we enact, nuclear disarmament will not happen. While Denmark would like to see complete nuclear disarmament as soon as possible, we realize this is not achievable without trust among nations. So we see the need to reestablish the trust that has been lost among nations in the wake of recent events. As without trust no one will give up a defense measure.
Perhaps this is a place where the United Nations needs to take more direct action. By assuming responsibility for the dismantling of nuclear weapons to ensure a quick and legitimate dismantling of nuclear weapons.
Everything comes back to trust if the United Nations is to serve its intended purpose we must reestablish trust among member nations.
