Egypt has a history of conflict and different regimes in control. Currently, after the latest coup, the Muslim Brother Hood was taken out of power and the military took control. Along with unrest within its own country, Egypt also is affected by the unrest of in the Middle East. With rising tensions, fighting could very easily break out at any time. Therefore, the threat of nuclear capability from countries like Iran and Israel, are of great concern to Egypt. They have been a supporter of the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty and originally signed it in 1968. However, Egypt has not signed any of the following treaties to prevent nuclear weapons because they feel that the proposals are not universal enough, meaning they exclude Israel. Egypt has proposed the creation of a Middle East Weapons of Mass Destruction Free-Zone, which would include Israel, but no agreement has been reached on this issue. Without these treaties in place Egypt has felt the need to work on its on nuclear program as a way of self-defense and other nuclear deterrents. Currently they have the third largest nuclear program in the Middle East, but are willing to give up all nuclear weapon applications if the treaties can be agreed upon. A simple solution to have Egypt sign the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty is to have all countries be a part of it. This way all countries in the Middle East are affected. Also an agreement on the Middle East Weapons of Mass Destruction Free-Zone would be a highly favorable solution to the problem of nuclear weapons along with other highly destructive weapons, such as chemical weapons. Until an agreement is reached Egypt will continue to strength its nuclear program in self defensive purposes.
