Trinidad and Tobago is very pleased to be apart of this committee, as it recognizes the growing problem of pollution from greenhouse emissions, water pollution and the complication of urban sprawl due to increased urbanization causing an impact on their surrounding coastal ecosystems.
Pollution is a growing problem throughout the country, especially in regards to water. The main water pollutants Trinidad and Tobago face are from urban, industrial and agricultural products and waste; also from the oil industries from oil spilled by oil and energy industries, and waste from fishing vessels, yachts, ships and tourist facilities. The pollutants affect both inland freshwater and coastal water resources. That being said, economic growth and development along with growth of the human population is resulting in major environmental degradation of watersheds, water resources and coastal areas, and for Trinidad and Tobago, the coastal habitats and ecosystems assume significant importance. The country unfortunately experiences much of the full range of environmental problems, and hopes to resolve them.
Trinidad and Tobago is also a significant signatory to the Framework Convention on Climate Change (FCCC), which aims toward achieving drastic reductions in CO2 emissions and other greenhouse gases.
Trinidad and Tobago hopes to formulate a strong national management framework in order to deal with the pressures of increasing growth of urban development, population and industrial activity, and the accompanying pressures of the environment. To establish this framework, Trinidad and Tobago wishes to implement a concept of integrated resource management to attain sustainable development, establishment of an effective.financially autonomous institutional framework that facilitates proper water resources and coastal management, while also maintaining the protection of the environmental quality of ecosystems of watersheds and coastal areas.
