The developing of technology for warfare has revolutionized itself repetitively, especially in the 20th and 21st century. The creation of nuclear weapons, mainly bombs, has increased since the atomic bombs created in 1954. Increases in the creation atomic weapons strains relationships between countries and raises the threat of nuclear mass destruction. Although many countries have access to resources for the creation of nuclear weapons or already possess them, such as the neighboring countries to Afghanistan, being Pakistan and India, Afghanistan has not been in the possession of nuclear weapons.

The Islamic Republic of Afghanistan suffered through political instability, civil war, and extremist terrorist groups in the 20th century. Afghanistan has signed the Nuclear Nonproliferation Treaty in 1970 which was created to encourage the use of nuclear power being used peacefully and the cessation of nuclear weapon power. With the Nuclear Nonproliferation Treaty, the Nuclear Global framework is the system used to expand the awareness of safety and security for Nuclear programs and facilities. Afghanistan participated as a party to the International Convention for the Suppression of Acts of Nuclear Terrorism in 2005, as to enforce the security and monitoring of nuclear acts of terrorism. Since Afghanistan has had intimate experience with terrorist groups, mainly Al-Qaeda, it’s the participation of the Nuclear Terrorism Convention was a move that would closely oversee the protection of nuclear or radioactive materials from being possessed by a person or group other than the government.

Afghanistan believes that the use of Nuclear power should be used strictly for peace, and with it’s ratification of the Comprehensive Nuclear Test-Ban Treaty, that Nuclear testing should be banned from further use. Afghanistan believes that the United Nations should continue to re-enforce Nonproliferation and the prevention of Nuclear accidents.
