The trade of high-tech weapons systems needs to be resolved for the security of the world. According to The International Institute for Strategic Strategies, the world spends over a trillion dollars on military expenses with 20-30% of it being arms, much of which are high-tech arms. The topic of trade in high-tech weapons systems is important for the committee to address. The security of the countries trading weapons and any countries that are affected. We know first hand of the results of a weapon trade. We understand this as a result of constant threats of the arms trade from Israel. Israel has used high tech weaponry to target Palestinian citizens. Palestine signed the Arms Trade Treaty as a result. The Arms Trade Treaty regulates the trade of arms.
We believe that the UN must take precautions to prevent against the weapons trade. The topic is an issue in Palestine; it deeply affects our citizens. We have supported the Arms Trade Treaty along with 63 other countries. We, the delegates of Palestine understand the the need to limit the trade of high-tech weapons. Adel Atieh, a delegate from Palestine, stated “Drones with lethal autonomous munitions have been extensively used to target Palestinians.” The delegation of Palestine participates in the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons to help aide in the fight against the trade of nuclear weapons. Palestine also recognizes the effects of money given for the trade of high-tech weapons. Israel receives 3.1 billion dollars a year from the United States government. This money is then often used to buy high tech weaponry which will be used on other countries. Effects of the actions stated above are a problem for the countries involved in the weapons trade as well as countries that are victims of the weapons being used. The U.N also recognizes the trade of anti-material weapons, weapons used against material such as buildings as a threat to the security of nations.
In order to prevent the arms trade of high tech weapons, the delegation of Palestine believe that it would be wise to restrict the trade of these weapons by developing strict penalties for countries that engage in the arms trade. Palestine understands the results of the high tech weapons trade from experience through Israel.The delegation of Palestine would like to see sanctions that do and those that use the arms on their neighbors. These could include cutting foreign aid or prohibiting foreign aid from going to these countries. In order to prevent the arms trade of high tech weapons, the people of Palestine believe that it would be wise to restrict the trade of these weapons. The lives of men, women, and children depend on the ability of the DISEC committee to solve these problems. Palestine hopes the resolutions created in this committee will help solve this problem.
