Development is the key to prosperity and stability. Worldwide every nation searches for a way to quickly develop socially, politically, and economically. Athletics is one of the fastest growing economic sectors in the world and has the potential to help with development globally. It brings communities together by bridging social divides and increasing jobs, along with promoting well being physically and mentally. Events such as the World Cup, the Super Bowl, and the Olympics are a few to name that helped with development. Using the method of sport as a tool for development will extremely benefit the United Nations.
Austria, alongside the European Union, promotes the use of sport in development. The Erasmus+ sport program does this by helping to develop sport in the European Union, boosting cooperation between sports organisations and sharing the promotion of good practices for health expanding physical activity. EU countries are also using European Social Fund and European Regional Development fund grants to include projects that promote social inclusion through sport. Not only will the countries develop medically, but also socially. These projects show equal opportunities for women and girls, and people with disabilities to develop leadership skills. Additionally, a project called Football against Racism in Europe builds up equality throughout Europe. Economically, sport boosts development in all sorts of ways from their growing popularity- ticket sales and sport games help the economy immensely. The 2014 Brazil World Cup itself made 4.8 billion dollars which is a tremendous amount of money. Austria’s federal ministry of health industry ensures that physical activity is met of people of all ages and promotes exercise by integrating cycle paths, play grounds and routes to school.
If the United Nations were to make sport development global, this would definitely increase economic growth and promote equality worldwide. The United Nations we should start by launching projects around the world and partner with top sport players and companies. Another policy The United Nations must create is a way to help and have countries host worldwide sporting events along with a strict budget and a set of rules for these events and ensure this will happen. Austria expects that other European Union countries will abide by this resolution.
