The most pressing issue relating to this topic is the tensions between two groups called the Israeli Jews and Arab Muslims. Both dispute the borders established by the United Nations at the end of World War I in 1947. The dispute over areas in the Gaza Strip and Jerusalem have resulted in decades of conflict and war since that time. An estimated 80% of people living in this region depend on foreign aid to survive. They live in what has been called the world’s largest ‘open-air prison.’ Denmark holds the position that this conflict must be resolved. Both sides of the conflict are engaging in destructive ways such as war, hostile government control and forcefully demanding what they believe they are entitled to take. Humanitarian aid to the region is the only reason many of the people living there are surviving in these war torn areas. Denmark believes all people deserve the right to basic human needs and a healthy lifestyle such as clean water, fresh good, safety, tolerance and respect. Denmark believes that a peaceful resolution in this situation is possible. Both the Israeli Jews and the Arab Muslims must be willing to compromise. Denmark agrees with the United Nations Assembly Resolution 181 should be upheld. The distinct borders for each country, leaving the disputed Jerusalem international territory, gives both the Nation of Palestine and the State of Israel independent land as well as leaving the disputed Jerusalem neutral. Denmark further believes the cornerstone to growth is education and support of all global citizens. Tolerance and respect for all people must be taught and accepted. Palestinian people deserve to be treated with respect. One peaceful way to accomplish this would be an embargo against Israel until they end the occupation of Palestine. The United Nations should extend respect to Palestinians by recognizing the state. This would allow Palestinians to gain independence from their oppressors.
