Topic: 2025-Safeguarding and Promoting Traditional Sports and Games
Country: China

Traditional sports and games are an important part of a country’s culture, history, and identity. However, in today’s world, modernization and globalization have led to the decline of many traditional sports. Younger generations are not learning them, and some traditional games are at risk of disappearing forever. As a nation with a rich history of traditional sports such as Wushu, Taijiquan (Tai Chi), and Dragon Boat Racing, China believes that protecting these sports is essential for preserving cultural heritage.
China strongly supports the 2003 UNESCO Convention for the Safeguarding of Intangible Cultural Heritage, which recognizes traditional sports as part of a nation’s identity. We believe that governments should take steps to promote traditional sports by including them in school curriculums, organizing international festivals, and increasing public awareness. One way to achieve this is through education—by teaching traditional games in schools, we can ensure that younger generations continue to practice and appreciate them.
China also encourages international cooperation to protect and promote traditional sports. Hosting global events, such as a World Traditional Sports Festival, would help countries share and celebrate their traditional games. Additionally, creating a global database of traditional sports would allow nations to document and preserve them for future generations.
Technology can also play a role in preserving traditional sports. China suggests using digital documentation and virtual reality (VR) technology to record and showcase traditional sports, making them more accessible to a global audience. This would ensure that even if a sport is no longer widely practiced, its techniques and cultural importance are preserved.
China is committed to working with UNESCO and other nations to promote traditional sports. By raising awareness, encouraging education, and using modern technology, we can ensure that these important traditions continue to thrive for generations to come.
