Recently this past summer, an armed conflict between the Russian Federation and Georgia erupted. Fighting occurred because of a border dispute. The area of South Ossetia is officially part of Georgia, but many of the residents have close ties to Russia, and carry dual passports. Russia feels that the area should be able to decide for itself whether it is a part of Georgia or Russia. The Russian Federation also claims that the Georgian used artillery to kill 1,600 South Ossetians. Georgia claims that Russia invaded its borders without provocation, and that it was not abusing international norms of human rights in South Ossetia prior to the Russian invasion. People who are in support of Georgia compare Russia’s actions to that of Hitler’s in claiming the Sudetenland before World War II.
The Islamic Republic of Pakistan has stayed out of the conflict, along with every other nation in the UN, although it is in compliance with the UK and the US, in that Russia is at fault of most of the Humanitarian violations. Russia is denying access to international humanitarian organizations, such as the Red Cross, which is preventing approximately 128,000 internally, displaced civilians, and, thousands of others from receiving assistance. Russian forces have looted Georgian facilities, destroyed essential infrastructure and allowed paramilitary bands to do the same. Russian naval vessels are destroying Gerogian ships and disrupting civilian shipping. The Islamic Republic of Pakistan feels that this cannot continue. We will continue to support Georgia’s democracy, and will continue to insist that Georgia’s sovereignty, independence and territorial integrity be respected.
The UN is eager to end this conflict, and is working hard to find an end. A peace plan was made between Russia and Georgia. Also the UN has passed a resolution that helps finance the UN observer mission is Georgia. The resolution emphasizes that all peacekeeping missions shall be provided with adequate resources for the effective and efficient discharge of their respective mandates. With this resolution passed, the Islamic Republic of Pakistan hopes that the conflict will end soon.
The Islamic Republic of Pakistan believes that all of the damage caused by the conflict, was a result of the actions of the Russian Federation. They were the ones making a big deal about the citizenship/ boundary lines of South Ossetia, and were the invaders. Russia should have to pay for all the damage done in Georgia, and give aid to all the civilians harmed by the conflict. This will be similar to the way Germany has to make apparitions because of its actions in World War II. The Islamic Republic of Pakistan feels that this is the only true way for Russia to make right what it did wrong.
