The United Kingdom is deeply disturbed by situation in Georgia and by the events that have been taking place since August 7th. Russia’s entrance into the region has caused a great deal of unnecessary conflict. Russia’s overwhelming military advantage has greatly aided Russia’s unjustified push of Georgian military forces out of the regions of South Ossetia and Abkhazia. Russia has accused Georgia of killing 1600 South Ossetians while Georgia claims that it did not abuse any norms of international human rights.
The UK and NATO have a strong partnership with Georgia and fully side with Georgia on this issue. The United Kingdom gives its full support to the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Georgia. The United Kingdom and NATO also have a partnership with Russia but because of Russia’s recent action the UK cannot continue operations as normal. By recognizing the independence of South Ossetia and Abkhazia, Russia is unrightfully attempting to redraw the borders of Georgia. The UK does not condone this action in any way at all.
The United Kingdom believes that with the cooperation of Georgia, Russia, South Ossetia, and Abkhazia the Six Points Plan should be strictly enforced. Russian forces should also be immediately moved back to their position prior to the 7th of August. There must also be a complete and permanent cease-fire in the region by all participating forces. This issue can be peacefully resolved with the full cooperation of both sides and the member states of the UN.
