Indonesia straddles a series of fault lines that makes the vast island nation prone to volcanic and seismic activity. On December 26, 2004 a giant earthquake triggered a tsunami in the Indian Ocean that killed 230,000 people. Indonesia, part of the “ring of fire,” has seen many catastrophes, from the eruption of the Mount Merapi Volcano to the 2005 Bali bombings. Somalia and Indonesia alike have had tremendous misfortune. The often-natural disasters that have taken place in Indonesia correlates to the humanitarian crisis in Somalia today. Indonesia has had its time of need, now it is time to aid Somalia. Out of appreciation and humility, Indonesia offers alleviation to the struggling country of Somalia.
Found in the Horn of Africa, the situation in Somalia is undoubtedly the worst humanitarian disaster of the year. This country has been without an effective central government since 1991. The political instability worsened when Al Qaeda affiliated groups gained control of southern Somalia. The highly feared militant Islamist group, Al Shabab has had a strict agenda to target Westerners and those affiliated with Western organizations. Impart, due to the clan warlords, and pirates the country has spiraled into acute disaster. Much of the central and southern populations of Somaliland’s have taken refuge in bordering countries like Kenya because of Al Shabab kidnappings, warfare, anarchy, systematic recruitment and violence. In turn the displacement has caused an outbreak of famine that is hindered even more by drought, in the South of Somalia alone 29,00 children died within 90 days.
An estimated 3.76 million people, half the population, are in desperate need of aid and security. Many organizations have already mobilized to provide funds and relief, while increasingly other countries in Africa are joining in the advocacy. Indonesia encourages the endowment Djibouti contributed to the cause when announcing to send 850 soldiers to an African Union peacekeeping mission in Somalia. Uganda assists by sending 2,00 more soldiers to Somalia. Inspired, Indonesia would like to voice support for these countries and the Transitional Federal Government whose operations plan to create government and military structure. Indonesia proposes an agreement in the United Nations in aid to Somalia. By targeting assistance, appropriate training, new humanitarian laws to protect children, and increased funding, our united global community can save countless lives and expunge a terrible terrorist cult.
The United Nations supporting the Transitional Federal Government must pass cogent resolutions in favor and support of providing aid and alleviation to Somalia. This will create a strong foundation from where Somalia can build. Indonesia plans to obstruct the Al- Qaeda interference with military help, which would in turn create a larger sense of security, diminishing terrorist activity and piracy. Thus creating security compatible for all world citizens. The United Nations must convene in the situation, while maintaining respect towards Somalia’s national sovereignty. The potent strength the United Nations offer will save lives, childhoods, and stability in Somalia.
