The dire situation in Somalia is one that can no longer be ignored. With violence increasing every day and the continuation of failed attempts to unify the country, this issue is one that can wait no longer to be solved. Pakistan has always stood behind Somalia and their efforts to create a unified Islamic state. We gave support to them during their revolution, giving our troops and money so that they may be allowed to form a stable government for their people. Now that the Transitional Federal Government, currently operating as the head of Somalia, is planning for elections next year the time to act and secure Somalia’s future is now. We as the United Nations must make motions now to assure that these elections go on as planned and that the stability of Somalia is increased. There must be decreased terrorism and increased unification within that country if we ever hope to bring Somalia back from the brink of total chaos.
Pakistan has a history of helping Somalia and we are willing to do it again. We were one of the most recognized groups in helping Somalia during their civil war. We have always been very active in all actions taken by the United Nations in the 1990’s and we are hoping to be able to play the same role this time. After having given so much to stabilize and promote the well-being of this country we have no qualms about giving this final effort to push Somalia into stability and prosperity. Pakistan, after giving so much, cannot stand idly by and allow this country to return to the way they were before United Nations aid. We were the first to respond to the United Nations call for aid when Somalia needed it before and we will be glad to do it again.
Pakistan believes that this problem can be remedied with careful planning and execution of aid missions to Somalia. First we must work on the protection of the innocent citizens from terrorist and insurgency acts around the nation. We must also provide aid and support in unifying the nation under the standing government and promoting the election of an official ruler in 2012. We would hope that our allies China, Saudi Arabia, Iran and Turkey would help us in our efforts, as well as other nations who had helped Somalia before such as Austria, Canada, France and Germany.
