One of the worst things that could happen on this planet we call home would be for terrorists to obtain WMD’s. WMD’s are weapons of mass destruction, which are chemical, biological, nuclear, or radiological weapons. The people of this world would be put in grave danger if these weapons were to fall in to the wrong hands. Just one of these weapons has the ability to kill millions of people. Actions need to be taken to prevent terrorists from obtaining these weapons.
South Africa believes that nations should disarm their stockpiles of WMD’s. We have done this ourselves in 1989. If the rest of the world would disarm some if not all of their stockpiles this would make it increasingly difficult for terrorist organizations to acquire WMB’s. If the world adopts a treaty similar to the African Nuclear-Weapon Free Zone Treaty we could help prevent WMD’s from falling into the wrong hands. The African Nuclear-Weapon Free Zone Treaty bans the research, development, manufacturing, stockpiling, testing, possession, control or stationing of nuclear explosive devices. This would make it much harder for terrorists to acquire or produce their own WMD’s because there would be much less components to make WMD’s available to terrorists since countries would not be testing, researching, or producing WMD’s.
The United Nations needs to do everything within its power to stop terrorists from obtaining WMD’s. The United Nations need to put a treaty in place similar to the African Nuclear-Weapon Free Zone Treaty. South African also encourages its fellow nations to disarm most if not all of its stockpiles of WMD’s.
