Egypt has been in a state of pandemonium since the events that occurred during the “Arab Spring” in 2011. Within the past two year Egypt has undergone violent protests, which have once again resulted in political power changing hands. The allocation of authority from Hosni Mubarak to Mohammad Morsi of the Muslim Brotherhood seemed to be an appropriate transition in its early stages. However, too soon were Egyptians calling for the removal of Morsi. This led to the establishment of a transitional government controlled primarily by the Egyptian military, along with the interim President, Adly Mansour. The recent shift of power has caused much discussion of the actions of the Egyptian military.
It is the opinion of the German government that the violent protests arising in Egypt are detrimental to the nation’s future. The brutality has had a negative effect on German businesses in Egypt as well. Germany has been tacitly forced to implement restrictions on the travel of governorates within the chaotic country and has strongly discouraged all travel to Egypt until further notice.
Germany trusts that the role of the Egyptian army is to stabilize the anarchical nation and to discourage situations that may lead to further life loss. Germany also recognizes that dialogue between the political powers of Egypt should be encouraged to take part in diplomatic conversations in order to mend the rift in the country. Such powers would need to include the Muslim Brotherhood due to its large role in orchestrating protests. The Muslim Brotherhood has had a large presence in Germany and thusly we understand that their role in discussion is of vital importance. Germany has been appalled by the violent actions that have occurred in Egypt and we urge all side of the conflict to end the violence so that diplomatic discussions may resume. The UN must work to alleviate the violent uprisings in Egypt through diplomatic means, while allowing the Egypt to retain its national sovereignty. If the UN does not intervene, Germany fears that, with so many factions fighting for power, a solution may never be reached.
