Safeguarding and Promoting Traditional Sports and Games

United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization

Topic: Safeguarding and Promoting Traditional Sports and Games

Traditional sports and games (TSG) are “practices in an individual or collective manner, deriving from regional or local identity, based on accepted rules.” In contrast to traditional global sports, TSG often have rules that are not formalized and may vary regionally, and often exist outside a formal governing body. These activities are considered a part of intangible cultural heritage, helping to foster social cohesion and showcase the diversity and richness of living heritage.

Many TSG were forcibly replaced during the colonial period, but even since then, globalization has continued to impact and threaten the future of many TSG worldwide. The reasons behind these changes are many. For instance, TSG relying on a certain level of snow or ice have had their seasons shortened or eliminated as global temperatures have risen over recent years. The impacts of urbanization on traditionally rural communities have made a dramatic shift in the cultural practices of those populations. The decentralized and informal nature of these games also means that there is often no centralized source of funding and policy support, leaving TSG without an advocate as other forces may push them towards extinction.

Since the turn of the century, UNESCO has worked to help prevent this cultural loss by documenting TSG and providing resources to help teach them and grow their popularity. However, there is much debate as to what preservation looks like for many of these TSG. Olympic inclusion is likely the highest goal for a traditional sporting event. While this type of result would certainly lead to a sustained existence for the sport, the traditional role of the sport and its cultural significance may be lost as it changes in a way as to no longer represent the local heritage on the global stage. There is no one-size-fits-all descriptor for all TSG, and with varied and changing threats to their existence, an array of solutions will be required to maintain them going forward.

2025-Safeguarding and Promoting Traditional Sports and Games
Mexico
Brady Sievert
Mexico has a long and very Rich history of original games and sports from the region. Some of these traditional games often date back to thousands of years, thus making them very unique to the rest of the wider world. But to really keep these games safe from the development of the world, we must take a multifaceted approach to this problem. In order to keep these recreations alive and kept within the records of society, we must take actions to save them, through better government funded education on the subject, more cultural promotion to communities, and community involvement.
Our government should officially recognize these activities as part of Mexico’s cultural heritage, providing legal protections and funding for their preservation. This can be done via incorporating these sports into school curriculum and thus can ensure that younger generations can learn to appreciate them, while local communities and indigenous groups should be encouraged to pass down their traditions rooted in the history of our country. Public awareness through media, social campaigns, and even tournaments can also help keep these games, parts of our heritage, relevant. Additionally, maintaining dedicated spaces such as Ulama/Ōllamaliztli courts or Charrería arenas -traditional Central American games that have existed for thousands of years combined, along with training programs for instructors, can further encourage participation.
Games like that of Ulama and its similar relatives are only still practiced today in only four towns in the state of Sinola, Mexico. This is a tragic and telling message that if we don’t take time to remember the past, then it will inevitably fade away. Data on the UNESCO page only fortifies this fact. However, in collaboration with the National Commission for Physical Culture and Sports (CONADE) and the Mexican Federation of Autochthonous and Traditional Games and Sports (FMJDAT), UNESCO has evaluated joint actions to promote and safeguard traditional sports like Ulama. As aforementioned, It would be necessary to broaden the influence of this genre of sport to the country’s people as an act of preservation of heritage. By bringing together our citizens to preserve our history, it becomes possible to keep our legacy alive and well.
So it should be decided that we must put great importance on the preservation of what we take part in as a collective society, otherwise we’ll forget who we really are. We’ll stop caring about ourselves and will let our identity disappear. But even with our current efforts, we’ve still had difficulty in our mission to preserve our heritage, as today these rituals of our past, have seemingly been all but lost to time, and if we continue on our dangerous path of inaction, they will go extinct.

Topic: 2025-Safeguarding and Promoting Traditional Sports and Games
Country: Cuba
Delegate Name: Madeleine Baker

Cuba’s traditional sports and games are more than just pastimes; they represent the heartbeat of the nation’s culture, the living history of its people, and a powerful force for unity, identity, and pride. These traditions are woven into the very fabric of society, shaping communities, strengthening values, and maintaining a connection to history. Yet, as globalization accelerates and commercialized sports dominate the international stage, these treasured games face an existential threat. The disappearance of these cultural practices would be detrimental. The safeguarding of traditional sports and games is essential to the Republic of Cuba, not just as a tribute to the past, but as a vital component of the present and future development of this nation.
Cuba has long recognized the power of sport, not just as entertainment, but as a means of social transformation and cultural enrichment. Traditional activities such as baseball, with its citizen-driven roots, and dominoes, a beloved cornerstone of Cuban social life, serve as more than games—they function as cultural rituals that connect generations. Baseball, now an iconic national sport, began as a local tradition before evolving into a symbol of resilience and unity. This deep respect for sport led to the establishment of the National Institute of Sports, Physical Education, and Recreation (INDER) in 1961, an institution dedicated to ensuring athletic participation remains accessible to all, regardless of background. Unlike nations where sports are driven by profit, physical activity in Cuba is viewed as a fundamental right, a philosophy that extends to the protection of traditional games.
Beyond national borders, Cuba has championed the global preservation of cultural heritage. Participation in UNESCO’s Intergovernmental Committee for the Safeguarding of Intangible Cultural Heritage has reinforced efforts to document and revive traditional games before they are lost. Through the Bolivarian Alliance for the Peoples of Our America (ALBA), regional partnerships have strengthened cultural exchange, ensuring that traditional sports remain a living part of society. However, further action is required. The loss of these games would not simply mean the disappearance of recreational activities—it would signify the erasure of history, the silencing of ancestral voices, and the severing of a crucial link between past and present culture.
The international community must take decisive steps to protect these traditions. Increased funding for educational programs that integrate traditional sports into school curricula is necessary to ensure future generations inherit these cultural treasures. Global recognition and protection of traditional games are essential to prevent commercialization from stripping them of authenticity. The establishment of international sporting events that celebrate traditional games would provide the visibility and respect they deserve.
Cultural traditions should not be sacrificed in the name of modernization. Traditional sports and games are not relics of the past but integral parts of cultural identity. Their preservation must be prioritized before they fade into history. Immediate action is required to ensure that these invaluable traditions endure for generations to come.

Country: Republic of Slovenia

Topic A: Safeguarding and Promoting Traditional Sports and Games
Cultures around the world all have traditions of games, food, literature, and illustrations, shaped by geography and history. Sports and games are one such category that shows the identity of the people, showing how they view each other, the world around them, and what success is. Slovenia’s own sports culture shows how the modern world has affected sports. Globalization has seen new sports take hold of Slovenia’s population and become quite popular, but this also poses a risk to Slovenia’s own style of sports and even its traditional games.
Sports have always reflected their society, and remained local or regional for a long time, but colonialism spread sports by conforming colonies to their own culture. Such activity suppressed traditional sports and games, replacing it with popular sports today. Large conflicts like the World Wars also changed sports, with Slovenia’s sports, mostly mountainous, Germanized when they were occupied (Pavlin). After WWII and the creation of the UN, UNESCO was soon made, brought together by leaders imagining an organization that would use education, science, and culture to bring about peace (“Our history”). With the increase of connectivity and globalization, traditional games have the ability to be recorded, remembered, and even gain in popularity, but it can also become insignificant, as urbanization and social media reinforces a world culture. Later in the early 2000s, the Charter of Traditional Games and Sports was formed, as countries recognized the importance of sports in local communities, and how they should be protected and promoted (“Traditional Sports”).
To support participation in TSGs, individual countries can promote recreational areas for popular and traditional games alike. Education about TSGs in schools and coaches and staff in gyms or other physical activity centers that teach traditional sports in order to encourage their usage. Another way is to incorporate TSGs into the Olympics or other international sports organizations. To safeguard traditional games, sports museums and websites can record how the game is played, its history, and other relevant details, keeping the sport alive into the future.
Slovenia recognizes that games are an important part of their culture, with many people in their country enthusiasts of sports, and even housing top Olympic athletes, holding Slovenia near the top of medals per capita (“Sport is part”). Slovenia has many different unique styles of established sports, adapting gymnastics and skiing to fit their unique culture (Pavlin). Slovenia also hosts TSGs like pandolo, a Slovenian sport (“Slovenia – Panolo”). Acknowledging the widespread physical activity of its citizens, Slovenia provides physical education and state-of-the-art recreational centers, such as gyms, to its citizens, which are normally provided subsidies from local committees (“Slovenian Sporting”). Museums are also another useful way to record sporting history, and can be used as a source of income via tourism as well (Pavlin). In order to promote TSGs, Slovenia believes that countries should use their model, and establish gyms and educational programs to keep TSGs a part of the vibrant culture they represent.

Country: Democratic Republic of the Congo
Delegate Name: Carter Baar

Imperialization has created many lasting scars in societies around the world that are still very prominent today. After many peoples were robbed of the natural resources around themselves, they had little to get by and many problems that their oppressors left them with. Not to mention that the oppressors divided up the land in ways that would pair up conflicting tribes and lead to corruption and conflict that has lasted to this day. One of such nations that was created was the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Although they have had the same problems with conflict and depletion of resources, the Congo has also been able to enjoy more of their culture than before. However, struggle between ethnic groups, specifically with those in power, has led to suppression of some cultures.
The Democratic Republic of the Congo believes that cultures should not be repressed and that all people have the right to their own expression. Congo typically points blame at western powers, mainly using history as a point of reference. Although some culture has been able to present itself in Congo, such as the rise of the popular sports Nzango, Kipura, and Libanda (Home), the development of culture in Congo is a complicated topic, as many ethnic groups contest for power and often turn a blind eye to rival ethnicities. Therefore, the DRC is controversial in the way that they mostly support cultural growth, but are biased to which cultures are helped, and which ones are left behind (Minority Rights Group). That is just one side of the coin, however, because wanting to spread awareness of a culture or sport is much different than being able to, and with limited money, infrastructure and resources that the DRC has at its disposal limits the advancement of recreational infrastructure (Least Developed Countries). Which in turn limits the popularity and influence of sports and promotes already popular sports such as soccer.
As a developing nation, the Congo supports legislation which will help improve infrastructure building that can then support the growth of traditional games. As the DRC is in a financial position that does not allow it to provide this financial aid, the DRC will look for opportunities from UN organizations such as the UNDP, UNESCO, and other willing countries. The DRC will also look to maintain state sovereignty and not accept programs that coerce countries into supporting traditional sports. However, it will encourage other countries to follow its lead in providing traditional sports to the populace and opening up cultural opportunities while maintaining order and peace.

Delegate Name: Brendon Sutton

Brazil boasts a rich cultural diversity, featuring numerous conventional sports and games that hold deep social and cultural significance. One of the most important is Capoeira, a unique Afro-Brazilian martial art that combines dance, acrobatics, and music. Through various institutions such as the Ministry of Culture and local cultural bodies, The Brazilian government actively promotes and preserves these traditional games. UNESCO itself has become involved by inscribing Capoeira on its Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2014.

Brazil has shown a strong commitment to protecting and promoting its traditional sports and games. From the more popular sports like Capoeira to lesser-known games like Peteca, Brazil’s traditional sports serve as a vital link to the country’s cultural heritage. By bringing these sports into festivals, educational initiatives, and international platforms, Brazil ensures these important cultural practices aren’t lost to future generations. However, ongoing efforts are required to maintain and revitalize these traditions, especially as modernization and globalization continue to shape the cultural landscape.

The Federative Republic of Brazil joined UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization) on June 19, 1964, and has since built 24 UNESCO buildings within its borders. With many famous historical sites, including “Christ the Redeemer” and “Brasilia,” it is clear that Brazil is committed to protecting and preserving its historical landmarks and traditional games. In addition to a Decree-Law from 1937 aimed at safeguarding national and artistic heritage, Brazil hosts the extremely popular Carnival event that celebrates its people’s heritage.

Brazil believes that other countries should make attempts to protect their heritage by passing laws to return items to their rightful countries for reasons such as colonialism or having been removed due to which and guarantee that heritage sites that may be destroyed are saved and preserved to teach the later generations and spread their culture through sports, dance, or other things of that nature.

Topic: 2025-Safeguarding and Promoting Traditional Sports and Games
Country: Republic of Korea
Delegate Name: Zaitun Kirabo

The Republic of Korea, like many esteemed nations, has been witness to the rise in modern sports and games due to globalization. And while these games serve as a platform for national pride and global engagement, they also pose a risk to the preservation of Korea’s traditional sports and games, which are an integral part of the nation’s identity. Tied deeply with the nation’s history, games such as Yutnori, Ssireum(traditional Korean wrestling), and Neolttwigi (traditional seesaw game), are exemplary of the core values and cultural ideals of South Korea. They showcase skills in strategy, physical prowess, and teamwork, each being a valued tenant. However, as the birthplace of e-sports, South Korea has also adopted a culture of gaming and a lucrative esports market. And with a popularization of internet cafes during the 90’s, Korea successfully created a gaming culture among youths that would eventually lead to the popularity the industry has today and partially the decline in active participation and interest in traditional sports.

Though it was not created to directly address this issue. In 1962, Korea passed the Cultural Heritage Act of 1962 and with it came the Cultural Heritage Administration (CHA). Both the act and the program are aimed at protecting and preserving South Korea’s cultural heritage. More specifically in the UNESCO 2003 Convention for the Safeguarding of Intangible Cultural Heritage, South Korea successfully designated Ssireum and Taekkyeon as Intangible Cultural Heritage, and established legal protections for the sports. In this same vein, the government’s 100 policy tasks that were presented in 2017 included the specific goal of building a vibrant country where everyone could enjoy sports. So, in an effort to balance the scale, Korea also sought to expand its booming esports market. In 2019, the Korean esports organization Gen.G partnered with the global education company Elite Open School to launch the Gen.G Esports Academy in Seoul. These are many of the various initiatives the Republic of Korea has undertaken to preserve and nurture its historic and new games.

It is from this angle that the Republic of Korea proposes these following measures necessary for the preservation of traditional sports and games. While it is true that government funding and legal protections have successfully negated the complete disappearance of cultural games, lack of interest and participation is still a pressing issue. We believe that through global collaboration we might be able to shine a spotlight onto our largely overlooked rich sporting histories. With the creation of an international sports program and the integration of traditional sports into school curriculums the problem of lack of interest and participation can be tackled. And through a combination of advertisement and education we can ensure that our traditional sports and games can remain an active part of our national identities.

Traditional sports and games (TSG) are integral to Nigeria’s rich cultural heritage, embodying the values, history, and identity of its diverse ethnic groups. However, the rapid globalization and dominance of modern sports have led to a decline in the practice and recognition of Indigenous games. Safeguarding and promoting TSG is essential for cultural preservation, community cohesion, and the development of local talent. Despite their cultural significance, traditional sports such as Dambe, and Ayo face several challenges. These include a lack of institutional support, inadequate funding, dwindling interest among the youth, and minimal media coverage. The absence of structured competitions further weakens their sustainability. The Nigerian government recognizes policies that see, TSG as an essential part of the nation’s sports development framework, Including allocating funds for their promotion. Leveraging digital platforms to showcase traditional sports can introduce awareness and interest. Broadcasting events on television and social media can attract wider audiences, both locally and internationally. Private sector investment in traditional sports can provide the necessary financial backing for events, training facilities, and athlete development. Traditional sports and games are a vital part of Nigeria’s heritage and should not be allowed to fade into obscurity, with many other TSGs. Through government policies, community involvement, media utilization, corporate sponsorship, and international collaborations, these cultural assets can be safeguarded and promoted for future generations. The Nigerian government asks for collaboration with other UNESCO members to find ways to keep TSGs alive and documented. In collaboration With UNESCO members, We can manage to look into more ways for TSGs to be an essential part of every country’s heritage. However, Nigeria hasn’t adopted the UNESCO 2003 Convention for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage but is willing to protect TSGs and possibly implement them.

Topic: 2025-Safeguarding and Promoting Traditional Sports and Games
Country: Germany
Delegate Name: Alexander Stillman

Traditional sports and games (TSG) exist across every country in the world. Traditional sports and games (TSG) encompass a wide range of culturally significant activities passed down through generations. Thus, TSG are immeasurably important to many individuals, regions, and groups with many carrying their diverse array of TSG. German culture is also filled with many of these games ranging from sports to board games, such as Platzbahnkegeln (square bowling), Mensch ärgere Dich nicht (board game), and Coppit (Capture the Hat). Games like these not only serve to help individuals and groups connect to their cultural heritage, but they also encourage problem solving and physical activity.
However, these activities’ very existence as many of these sports that became increasingly less-known and unpopular during the colonial era are dying out due to the rapid globalization of the 20th and 21st century. Germany acknowledges that traditional sports and games are crucial for maintaining intergenerational knowledge transfer and community identity. Germany believes that TSG should not be viewed as relics of the past but as dynamic cultural expressions that can be adapted to modern contexts. The country acknowledges that unless active steps are taken to preserve and promote these games, they may be lost forever, along with the unique values, traditions, and histories they embody. Therefore, Germany calls for a balanced approach that respects historical authenticity while also allowing for innovation and modernization to keep TSG relevant.
As a federation consisting of many, culturally diverse states, Germany has long been engaged in the promotion of cultural heritage through various initiatives, including the UNESCO Convention for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage (2003). Traditional sports have been integral to regional identities and continue to be promoted through local and national efforts. Germany actively supports the documentation of traditional sports and games through ethnographic studies, digital archives, and academic research and is committed to expanding such efforts within UNESCO’s frameworks. With the important acknowledgment of the role that media plays in cultural promotion, Germany will advocate for increased digitization of traditional sports through documentaries and online tutorials. Partnering with broadcasters and digital platforms will help bring TSG into the mainstream. Germany will push for the integration of traditional sports into school programs worldwide.
Germany remains steadfast in its commitment to safeguarding and promoting traditional sports and games as a means of preserving cultural heritage and fostering global unity. The delegation calls upon UNESCO member states to collaborate in advancing sustainable policies and initiatives that ensure the longevity and relevance of TSG for future generations not just in Germany, but around the world.

Topic: 2025-Safeguarding and Promoting Traditional Sports and Games
Country: United States of America
Delegate Name: Diego Picazo Erb-Downward

The United States of America recognizes the importance of safeguarding and promoting traditional sports and games (TSG) as a crucial component of intangible cultural heritage. These practices, often rooted in regional or local identity, foster social cohesion and showcase the diversity of living heritage. However, TSG face numerous challenges, including globalization, climate change, and urbanization, which threaten their continued existence. The U.S. supports UNESCO’s efforts in documenting and preserving these activities while advocating for a balanced approach that maintains their cultural significance while promoting sustainable growth.

Historically, many traditional sports and games were marginalized or replaced during the colonial period, and even today, globalization continues to erode their presence. Factors such as climate change have shortened or eliminated the seasons for winter-based TSG, while urbanization has disrupted rural traditions. Furthermore, the decentralized and informal nature of these games often results in a lack of funding and policy support, leaving them vulnerable to extinction. Without proper advocacy, TSG risk being overshadowed by more mainstream, commercially driven sports.

The United States believes that a multifaceted strategy is necessary to ensure the survival and growth of TSG. One key aspect is strengthening policy frameworks that provide financial and institutional support for TSG at local and national levels. Increased funding and awareness programs can help revitalize traditional games and ensure their sustainability. Educational initiatives should be developed to incorporate TSG into school curricula, thereby exposing younger generations to these valuable traditions and encouraging active participation.

Another critical component is leveraging modern technology and media to document, promote, and broadcast TSG to wider audiences. Digital archives, virtual platforms, and social media can play an essential role in preserving traditional games and increasing their accessibility. International collaboration should be encouraged to facilitate knowledge-sharing and cross-cultural exchanges that allow TSG to thrive in diverse environments without losing their intrinsic cultural value.

While Olympic inclusion may seem like an ideal goal for TSG, the United States acknowledges that such formalization could alter their traditional role and significance. Therefore, alternative avenues for global recognition should be explored, such as regional tournaments, international showcases, and partnerships with cultural organizations. This approach ensures that TSG maintain their authenticity while still receiving the support necessary for their longevity.

The United States affirms its commitment to preserving and promoting traditional sports and games as an essential part of cultural heritage. By implementing targeted policies, increasing funding, utilizing technology, and fostering international cooperation, UNESCO and its member states can work together to safeguard these invaluable practices for future generations. The U.S. stands ready to collaborate with international partners to ensure that TSG remain a vibrant and enduring component of global heritage.

Delegate Name: Davis Mortenson

South Africa is a highly diverse country that possesses a multitude of cultural practices and traditions which make the country what it is today. Along these lines, South Africa has twelve official languages, the third most among all countries in the world, and has strong protections for cultural and religious traditions and practices. These protections encompass the many games and sports that people partake in, as Sections 30 and 31 of the South African Constitution (effective 1997) guarantees the right of every person to participate in the culture of their choice and entitles all persons belonging to these cultural communities to enjoy their culture. Thus, this confers protection to the many traditional sports and games (TSG) that individuals partake in in South Africa.

As a country that has undergone vast social, political and cultural changes throughout its existence, South Africa understands the necessity of protecting the cultural traditions of all groups. South Africa played a pivotal role in establishing the International Council of Traditional Sports and Games (ICTSG) in 2018, and has supported many initiatives to guarantee the continued existence and practice of TSGs across the world. UNESCO itself has promoted TSG as a form of intangible cultural heritage, and has a designated TSG advisory committee, and has begun an effort to create an online and interactive encyclopedia on TSGs.

In Committee, South Africa wishes to initiate a multi-pronged approach to protect and celebrate Traditional Sports and Games, beginning ensuring the continued effort to creat eehe online encyclopedia on TSGs. Additionally, South Africa wishes to work to establish a TSG festival circuit, where Countries/Ethnic Groups can celebrate and educate others about the many unique TSGs that they partake in. South Africa envisions this festival to take place every 4 years, each festival in a different country that can put its unique spin on the festival. South Africa also wishes to encourage UNESCO members tates to incorporate TSG into educational curricula and into physical education programs, as this will ensure that the younger generations of the world grow up respecting and participating in a vast variety of TSGs.

Traditional sports and games are integral to Haiti’s culture and identity. Haiti does participate in major urbanized sporting events such as football (soccer), being the second Caribbean team to make it to the World Cup in 1974. On top of making it to the world cup, they also won the Caribbean Nation Cup in 2007. Haiti also has its own traditional sports that are very important to the culture of the people living there. One such sport, named Pinge Wrestling, is a variation of wrestling that involves two competitors that stand within a large circle. The goal of the game is to force your opponent to touch the ground with the upper part of their body. Both competitors stand and grab each other’s shoulders in an attempt to throw the other onto the ground. Games like these aren’t as prevalent or widespread as other sports such as soccer and football. Overall, they are just as, if not more important than other popular games because of the chance of them being forgotten. Just like pieces of history, cultural games should be preserved and brought to future generations to keep the game alive.
Traditional sports and games are very important to Haiti’s culture. Haiti emphasizes the need to preserve these games by either introducing them to a televised competition like the Olympics, or keeping records of the rules and the way the game is played so as to not let it fade out of existence. Haiti recognizes that traditional games should also be taught to children at schools to keep the game going through multiple generations.

of its cultural identity. Through education, community engagement, media promotion, and
international collaboration, Panama seeks to ensure that these traditions continue to thrive for
future generations. By integrating them into daily life, Panama strengthens its cultural heritage
while fostering a sense of unity and pride among its people.

Topic: 2025-Safeguarding and Promoting Traditional Sports and Games
Country: Ghana
Delegate Name: Priya Mahabir

In the rich culture of traditional sports and games in Ghana, it is one of the most important and integral parts of Ghana’s culture. Between the games of Adukor, which is a form of football, and Kokou, which is a form of volleyball but can also be a form of handball and baseball, it has been passed down through generations, serving as a means of socialization, entertainment, and skill-building. It was deeply rooted in the tradition and the history of the Akan people. Traditional sports and games incorporate a unifying feeling such as teamwork, perseverance, respect, development of social skills, and character.

Tocatì is a shared program for the safeguarding of traditional sports and games. Ghana uses Tocati to increase access to public spaces, improve education, and raise awareness of cultural heritage. By using Tocati they have sports take place on the streets, mostly near touristy and highly urbanized areas, to bring more awareness to them so more people can play them. Having the sports being held on the streets was also for every to feel more included and for people to feel more equal. Placed on the streets so people can be more mindful of the culture and the heritage that these sports come from. SportDrive, a non-governmental organization, focuses mainly on standardizing and recognizing traditional games. Trying to promote positive social change and empower communities; they focused mostly on Ghana because of the unique games they had cherished. Both Tocati and SportDrive, promoted all their favorite game to bring more attention to them: express the cultural heritage, promote intercultural dialogue, provide an alternative to unethical sports practices, and help build sustainable and ethical sports and cultural practices.

Rapid urbanization has affected Ghana terribly: including congestion, unregulated urban expansion, limited access to services and affordable quality housing, and institutions unable to cope with the rapid transition. “Currently 51.9% of Ghana’s population lives in urban areas, and it is estimated that it will reach 72.3% by 2050” (Un-Habitat). All of which has happened within a few years. Also affecting Ghana was the shift in cultural practice, which was a decline in their active participation due to increased exposure to Westernized activities. Westernized activities are games, entertainment, and other activities that are associated with the Western world. They strive to revitalize these games to preserve cultural heritage, promote community bonding, and educate younger generations about Ghanaian traditions through initiatives like incorporating them into educational settings and celebrating them during cultural festivals. The Western influence is making children in Ghana less likely to play their own cultural sports because of the publicity around international sports. Because of the publicity around, mostly, American and European sports, it’s increasing a loss of culture. Actively declining their traditional games because the youth are attracted to things more popular and the older not actively passing on their traditional games. However, schools have tried to preserve the games by incorporating them into their P.E. classes and teaching them more about their cultural heritage. Also using community events to include these traditional games. They try to revive their culture, but they can’t compete with the popularity of social media from around the world.

Safeguarding and Promoting Traditional Sports and Games in Spain
In the rich cultural landscape of Spain, traditional sports and games are integral to our heritage, reflecting our diverse regional identities, history, and values. These activities, passed down through generations, are more than just recreational pastimes; they serve as cultural markers, fostering social cohesion, and preserving the collective memory of our communities. Spain recognizes the importance of safeguarding and promoting these traditional sports and games, both for their cultural significance and for their potential to contribute to broader social, economic, and educational objectives.
Traditional sports and games in Spain, such as pelota, juegos de la cuerda, baile del pañuelo, and the famous running of the bulls, have shaped the cultural landscape of the country for centuries. These activities are not only a form of entertainment but also a way to celebrate regional customs, rituals, and folklore. Many of these sports are tied to specific festivals, such as the Fiesta de San Fermin in Pamplona, where the encierro has become a global symbol of Spanish culture. The preservation of these practices is crucial to maintaining the cultural identity of different regions within Spain. Traditional sports often serve as a medium for transmitting local languages, customs, and values, which can be seen in the many regional variants of the same game, from the pilota in the Valencian region to la lucha canaria in the Canary Islands. The deep-rooted connection between these games and the communities that practice them gives them a unique cultural importance that deserves recognition and protection.

Despite their cultural importance, traditional Spanish sports face numerous challenges. As Spain becomes increasingly urbanized, traditional games risk being overshadowed by globalized, commercialized sports. The younger generation, often influenced by modern sports media, may lose interest in the practices that were once a central part of their community life. Many traditional games and sports rely on oral traditions and practices that are passed down through local communities. As these communities face demographic changes, including aging populations and migration, there is a growing concern about the loss of the necessary knowledge and skills to continue these practices. While many traditional games are celebrated regionally, there is insufficient institutional support at the national level for their preservation and promotion. This lack of funding, research, and infrastructure can make it difficult to ensure that these sports are passed onto future generations.
To ensure the preservation and promotion of traditional sports and games, Spain proposes lots of measures. We call for the recognition of traditional Spanish sports and games as part of our national cultural heritage. Legal protections, such as designating these sports as “intangible cultural assets,” would help secure their preservation by raising awareness and ensuring that they receive the necessary support from both local and national governments. The promotion of traditional sports should begin in schools and communities. Educational programs that introduce children to the history, values, and skills associated with these activities can foster a sense of pride and interest in their cultural heritage. Schools should collaborate with local cultural organizations to incorporate traditional games into extracurricular activities, allowing young people to engage with them in an interactive and meaningful way. To ensure the continued vitality of traditional sports, both public and private sector support is needed. This includes funding for events, festivals, and tournaments that showcase these sports and engage local communities. Additionally, investing in the development of training programs and centers for traditional sports will help preserve knowledge and improve the skills of practitioners.
Spain’s traditional sports and games also present an opportunity to enhance cultural tourism. By promoting these activities as part of the country’s tourist offerings, Spain can attract visitors who are interested in experiencing authentic, local traditions. International promotion of Spanish traditional sports, especially through social media and collaborations with cultural institutions abroad, will also increase global awareness and respect for our heritage. The success of safeguarding traditional sports and games depends on the active involvement of local communities. The Spanish government must work with regional cultural organizations, clubs, and local leaders to create programs that ensure these traditions continue to thrive. Supporting grassroots initiatives and empowering local communities to take leadership in preserving their traditions is essential.
In conclusion, Spain stands firm in its commitment to safeguarding and promoting traditional sports and games, recognizing their intrinsic cultural value and the role they play in strengthening our national identity. These practices reflect the diversity, creativity, and spirit of the Spanish people, and by supporting them, we will not only preserve our history but also enrich our cultural future. Through government action, educational initiatives, investment in infrastructure, and collaboration with local communities, we can ensure that the vibrant world of traditional Spanish sports continues to thrive for generations to come. We invite international partners, cultural organizations, and local communities to join us in this mission of preserving and promoting traditional sports and games. Together, we can create a future where these activities continue to serve as a source of pride, unity, and joy for all Spaniards and the global community.

Topic: 2025-Safeguarding and Promoting Traditional Sports and Games
Country: Argentina
Delegate Name: Lena Landau

Traditional Sports and games are a vital part of our identity and carry national and cultural heritage. Those traditional sports and games (TSG) are each unique and essential to our communities. Like for many others, modernization and globalization are raising threats to our TSG and therefore a threat to a rich and impactful part of our country’s culture. The Argentine Republic is dedicated to work on possible solutions and to participate in programs for the support and preservation of TSG.

With the development of technology and advancing globalization, the interest in TSG has steadily decreased over the years. We are sad to report a loss of interest in our traditional sports. As a country with a lot of traditions and culture, Argentina values TSG as a part of our national identity and cultural heritage. Sport like pato (juego del pato), a game played on horseback that combines elements from polo and basketball, jineteada gaucha or doma gaucha, a traditional rodeo where the rider tries to stay on an untamed horse for a number of seconds, or Tejo, a traditional throwing sport using gunpowder to explode on impact, are important to our communities and are slowly replaced by globalized sports, such as football or basketball, due to international media and governmental dominated funding. TSG are traditionally played on rural ground, making them harder to participate in cities and urban areas. In the past we tried advertising and encouraging TSG by national policies, starting with the Official Recognition of Pato 1953, declaring Pato as Argentina’s national sport, or by standardizing the Pato rules in the 1930s. We also participated in UNESCO’s initiatives for safeguarding TSG and supported policy guidelines and international platforms promoting cultural and sporting heritage.

Argentina recognizes the increasing challenges in the promotion and safeguarding of TSG and would like to support proposed solutions, such as increased global and national funding for education, advertisement, cooperation and media promotion. Furthermore we would like to urge all nations to take action in preserving those significant and important parts of heritage and identity.

Country: China
Delegate Name: Xinyu Wang

Traditional sports and games are an important part of a country’s culture, history, and identity. However, in today’s world, modernization and globalization have led to the decline of many traditional sports. Younger generations are not learning them, and some traditional games are at risk of disappearing forever. As a nation with a rich history of traditional sports such as Wushu, Taijiquan (Tai Chi), and Dragon Boat Racing, China believes that protecting these sports is essential for preserving cultural heritage.
China strongly supports the 2003 UNESCO Convention for the Safeguarding of Intangible Cultural Heritage, which recognizes traditional sports as part of a nation’s identity. We believe that governments should take steps to promote traditional sports by including them in school curriculums, organizing international festivals, and increasing public awareness. One way to achieve this is through education—by teaching traditional games in schools, we can ensure that younger generations continue to practice and appreciate them.
China also encourages international cooperation to protect and promote traditional sports. Hosting global events, such as a World Traditional Sports Festival, would help countries share and celebrate their traditional games. Additionally, creating a global database of traditional sports would allow nations to document and preserve them for future generations.
Technology can also play a role in preserving traditional sports. China suggests using digital documentation and virtual reality (VR) technology to record and showcase traditional sports, making them more accessible to a global audience. This would ensure that even if a sport is no longer widely practiced, its techniques and cultural importance are preserved.
China is committed to working with UNESCO and other nations to promote traditional sports. By raising awareness, encouraging education, and using modern technology, we can ensure that these important traditions continue to thrive for generations to come.

Topic: 2025-Safeguarding and Promoting Traditional Sports and Games
Country: Japan
Delegate Name: Safiya Mahmood

Traditional sports and games (TSG) in Japan, such as sumo, kendo, and various martial arts, reflect deep cultural practices and cultural identities that have been passed down for centuries. Unlike globally recognized sports, these traditional activities often lack standardized rules and formal governing bodies, which makes them more vulnerable to decline. During the Meiji Restoration in the late 19th century, Japan underwent significant modernization, which led to the suppression of many regional practices in favor of Western sports. However, traditional Japanese sports have persisted, and today they remain a vital part of cultural heritage. In modern times, Japan faces challenges similar to those seen in other countries: globalization, urbanization, and climate change. For example, sports that were once tied to rural life, like snow-based activities such as traditional winter festivals and games, are threatened by rising global temperatures and changing weather patterns. Additionally, rural-to-urban migration has disrupted the transmission of cultural practices, as younger generations are increasingly disconnected from these traditions. Since the early 2000s, Japan has supported UNESCO’s efforts to recognize TSG as part of the world’s cultural heritage. While some advocate for the inclusion of traditional sports in the Olympics to ensure their survival, Japan believes that this approach risks altering their authenticity and cultural significance. The Japanese perspective calls for sustainable solutions that strike a balance between global exposure and maintaining the traditions and values inherent to these practices.
Japan actively supports the preservation and promotion of TSG, both domestically and internationally. Traditional sports such as sumo, kendo and more remain integral to Japanese cultural identity. The Japanese government, through the Japan Sports Agency, has worked to maintain these practices by integrating them into school curricula and supporting national federations dedicated to their preservation. Japan has also backed UNESCO’s efforts to document and promote TSG and has historically supported international resolutions emphasizing cultural heritage protection. Also, Japan supported the adoption of the 2003 Convention for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage, which recognizes TSG as vital expressions of cultural diversity. Additionally, Japan backed the 2005 UNESCO Resolution 21, which highlighted the need for a global agreement on traditional sports and games. Japan has taken steps to modernize traditional sports while preserving their cultural roots. For example, sumo remains a respected sport with a structured professional league, while martial arts such as judo have gained international recognition without losing their historical significance. Japan advocates for a balanced approach that ensures cultural authenticity while allowing for adaptation and continued practice in modernized society.
Japan urges the United Nations and its member states to adopt a comprehensive approach to safeguarding and promoting TSG. One of the key recommendations is the integration of TSG into educational programs, particularly in physical education, to ensure that younger generations are educated about and appreciate these cultural practices. By including TSG in school curriculums, countries can help foster a sense of cultural pride and continuity among youth. Additionally, Japan calls for the establishment of global cultural exchange initiatives that enable athletes and practitioners to share their TSG practices across borders. This would help raise international awareness and appreciation of these traditions, while also promoting unity through sports. To further support TSG, Japan emphasizes the need for increased funding and policy support. Governments and international organizations should allocate financial resources and structural assistance for the preservation of TSG, including grants for community-led initiatives that can help sustain these practices at the local level. In line with modern technological advancements, Japan advocates for the use of digital platforms, online archives, and social media to document, teach, and promote TSG globally. These tools provide a unique opportunity to reach wider audiences, making traditional sports accessible and engaging to people from different cultures. Finally, Japan recognizes that the inclusion of traditional sports in the Olympic Games may be beneficial for some, but it is not a one-size-fits-all solution. Instead, Japan proposes the exploration of alternative methods of preservation, such as regional competitions and festivals, which can provide opportunities for these sports to thrive while maintaining their cultural integrity. These approaches balance global recognition with local authenticity which will be essential for the sustainable preservation of TSG, worldwide.

As a country rich with traditions and a strong national identity, we greatly value the importance of retaining and upkeep cultural heritage and identity, especially through the preservation and practice of traditional sports and games (TSG). Many TSG has been both founded and played throughout France, such as pétanque, a team-based boules sport, gouren, a folk wrestling style in Brittany, course landaise, a form of bull-leaping originating in Gascon and Joutes Nautique, water jousting in Southern France, which have been founded within our borders and have spread throughout Europe and regionally. France also contains a blend of cross-cultural identities founded through centuries of collaboration and continuation of unique cultures, including that of the Provencal ethnic group, the Occitans. Part of this stems from the adaptation of the Southern France dialect that is derived from native Occitan speakers and language in the region. There is also a nationwide effort to preserve the language, which has been succeeded through bilingual road signs, regional language rejuvenation, and bilingual schools. France holds the preservation of TSG to the same standards and efforts.
France fully supports the goal of maintaining cultural heritage and specifically respects the importance of community and individualistic identities within these communities that often lie in TSG and the historical and cultural significance they hold. As some of these communities and their history are lost to conflicts or a lack of widespread information, it is more important than ever before for us to archive and keep alive the traditions of these activities and their importance within the communities and on a global scale. In the 2003 UNESCO Convention for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage, France supported articles passed for the protection, promotion, and revitalization of intangible cultural heritage, such as TSG. France also participates in networks of TSG preservation, such as the Association of International Traditional Sports and Games (ITSGA) and the Association Européenne des Jeux et Sports Traditionnels (AEJeST), in an effort to spread global awareness of TSG and their importance to cultural identity.
TSG plays an integral role in the protection and maintenance of respective cultures and their histories, and the way to preserve this cultural importance is through increased promotion, education, and safeguarding of TSG. France proposes and advocates for an increase in media attention and awareness of TSG, specifically through regional or international events to honor and bring attention to them; however, it is most important to ensure that the identity, intention, and heritage of traditions behind the sports and games are preserved and kept the same. France also advocates for the further involvement of outside committees and departments inclusion and the international archive and database of all known TSG. This database would be able to keep track of the history and culture behind each TSG and promote their education. Education and promotion are essential in revitalizing and protecting the history and future of TSG and can be achieved through a combined global and regional effort for knowledge and preservation.

Topic: 2025-Safeguarding and Promoting Traditional Sports and Games
Country: Denmark
Delegate Name: Chloe Lee

The country of Denmark has valued traditional sports and games for over centuries, as we believe that it is a reflection of our country’s cultures and traditions. Games such as Laenkfage (capturing chains), Spark til Dassen (kick the can), and Mus (Mouse) have been universally enjoyed by many of our people and are intertwined with our cultural heritage. However, with the globalization of modern sports and games rapidly increasing over the years, many of the traditional sports and games of Denmark have been left in obscurity, as modern games are prioritized in competitions such as the Olympics over traditional games that reflect on the culture of several countries, not just Denmark. The motion to safeguard and promote traditional sports and games is urgent and necessary for protecting our tradition and cultural values.
Denmark has several policies and organizations regarding the topic of sports. This includes our two major sports organizations such as the Sports Confederation of Denmark and the DGI, which are currently working on a project to help Denmark become a major country in sports, with 75% of Danes participating in sports and 50% doing sports in clubs organizations. Denmark has also implemented policies such as the Danish Sports Policy Aims, which focuses upon sports integrity, sports in education, sports used for welfare, and so forth. However, these policies and organizations are centered around modern sports and games, pushing back traditional sports and games to an area of disinterest and neglect. Because of these issues, the country of Denmark has struggled to promote traditional games in recent years, an issue that must be fixed immediately.
Traditional sports and games are an important aspect of not just Denmark’s culture, but culture from different countries. These traditional activities are a massive contributor to what makes us unique and highlight the meaning of our cultures. In order to safeguard and promote traditional sports and games, measures must be taken in order to normalize traditional sports and games. Denmark advocates for a policy to require teaching traditional sports and games in sports education in order to bring back public interest within these cultural activities. With the teachings of traditional sports and games in schools, these activities will soon be normalized and beloved once more, protecting our culture and traditions under the threat of globalization.

Delegate Name: Madison Curtis

Safeguarding and Promoting Traditional Sports and Games in Bangladesh
Bangladesh is a country rich in cultural diversity and history, and this is reflected in its traditional sports and games. From the communal energy of kabaddi to the agility demanded by lathi khela (stick fighting), these games are more than just forms of entertainment. They embody the values, history, and collective spirit of communities across the nation. Unfortunately, with the rise of modern sports and the increasing influence of globalization, traditional sports in Bangladesh are at risk of being overshadowed and forgotten. The need to safeguard and promote these games is critical—not only for the preservation of cultural heritage but also for fostering community health and unity.
Traditional sports in Bangladesh serve as a vital thread that connects the past to the present. These games are deeply intertwined with local customs and are often passed down through generations, carrying with them cultural narratives and values. For instance, kabaddi, a sport that involves two teams alternating between offense and defense, is played by people of all ages across the country. It’s more than just a game—it represents the resourcefulness, strength, and teamwork of the participants. Similarly, golla (a local ball game) and ha-du-du (another traditional team sport) offer glimpses into the way communities have interacted for centuries.
Moreover, these games offer significant social benefits. They bring people together, promoting social cohesion within communities. The informal, often village-based nature of these games creates opportunities for interaction across generations, fostering bonds that are crucial for maintaining a sense of community. This is particularly important in rural areas where people are more likely to engage in outdoor, physical activities. The competitive yet cooperative nature of traditional sports nurtures mutual respect, teamwork, and collective responsibility—values that are integral to a healthy society.
In addition to their social and cultural value, traditional sports also contribute to physical and mental well-being. Games like kabaddi and kushti (wrestling) provide intense physical exercise that improves strength, coordination, and overall fitness. At the same time, they challenge participants mentally by requiring strategic thinking, teamwork, and concentration. In a world where sedentary lifestyles and screen time are increasingly prevalent, the active engagement that these sports require is vital for combating health issues such as obesity and physical inactivity.
Despite their importance, traditional sports in Bangladesh face significant challenges. One of the most pressing issues is the rapid pace of modernization and urbanization. As cities grow and modern sports like football, cricket, and basketball gain in popularity, traditional games are being pushed to the margins. With more entertainment options available—particularly through digital platforms—young people are less likely to engage with traditional forms of recreation. This shift is particularly pronounced in urban areas, where traditional games have all but disappeared.
Another major challenge is the lack of infrastructure and institutional support for these games. While facilities for cricket, football, and other modern sports are abundant, spaces for traditional sports are rare, especially in urban centers. In rural areas, where many of these games originated, there is often little to no funding or institutional backing to encourage their practice or preserve their rules. Without proper coaching, training, or organized events, it becomes difficult for these games to thrive in the contemporary sports landscape.
Additionally, changing social norms have led some people to view traditional sports as outdated or inferior to more globally recognized games. This perception has contributed to a decline in interest, particularly among younger generations who may not fully appreciate the historical and cultural value of these activities. The decline of traditional sports is, in many ways, a reflection of broader changes in societal attitudes and lifestyles.
Given the cultural, social, and health benefits of traditional sports, it is essential to take steps to safeguard and promote these games. One important avenue is incorporating traditional sports into the education system. Schools, particularly in rural areas, should make space for these games in their physical education curricula. This would not only educate young people about their cultural heritage but also give them opportunities to participate in games like kabaddi, lathi khela, and golla. By organizing school-level tournaments and events focused on these traditional sports, educational institutions can play a pivotal role in preserving these games for future generations.
Government support is also crucial in preserving and promoting traditional sports. Policy initiatives could include funding for infrastructure development in rural and semi-urban areas to ensure there are spaces where people can practice these games. Additionally, the establishment of training academies for traditional sports would help nurture talent and provide athletes with the necessary skills to compete at a higher level. Recognition of these sports in national programs could also bring them into the spotlight and inspire greater participation.
Another key strategy is revitalizing community events and festivals that celebrate traditional sports. Local governments and cultural organizations can collaborate to organize annual festivals where people can showcase traditional games and learn about their significance. Events such as kabaddi tournaments or golla festivals could draw attention to these activities and provide a platform for people from all walks of life to come together and celebrate their shared cultural heritage.
Raising awareness through media is another important step. Television, radio, and social media platforms can be used to promote traditional sports, helping them reach a wider audience. Documentaries, feature stories, and interviews with athletes can highlight the cultural importance of these games and inspire interest among younger generations. Social media campaigns that encourage participation in traditional sports could be particularly effective in reaching youth, who are more likely to engage with content online.
Lastly, partnerships between the public and private sectors can help foster growth in traditional sports. Local businesses, NGOs, and corporate entities can play an important role in sponsoring events, developing sports infrastructure, and providing funding for grassroots initiatives. Such collaborations could help build the necessary framework for the growth and sustainability of traditional sports.
Traditional sports and games are an integral part of Bangladesh’s cultural heritage. They serve not only as a reflection of the nation’s history but also as vital tools for promoting physical and mental health, building community spirit, and fostering a sense of national pride. However, the challenges posed by modernization, urbanization, and changing social attitudes have put these games at risk of disappearing. To safeguard and promote traditional sports, it is essential to incorporate them into education, invest in infrastructure, organize community events, and raise awareness through media and public-private partnerships. With these efforts, Bangladesh can ensure that its traditional sports continue to thrive and remain a key part of its cultural identity for future generations.
